‘Jealous’ dogs can ruin your romance!
London, Aug 19: When it comes to romancing the man or woman that you think is ‘The One’, be sure to be careful if your intended has a pet pooch, for a new research has found that dogs tend to get intensely jealous if they think that someone is coming between them and their carer.
The study, that challenges long-held scientific beliefs that only humans and chimps experience secondary emotions such as jealousy, guilt and pride, was conducted by psychologist and animal behaviour expert Dr Paul Morris and Christina Doe from the University of Portsmouth.
As a part of the study, Morris and Doe asked 1,000 domestic animal owners to examine and keep a note of their pet’s behaviour.
They found that dogs tend to feel intense pangs of jealousy and animosity when a third person comes into their carer’s life thus creating a sort of ‘love triangle’.
“In every report of jealousy in dogs, you had the situation where the dog’s primary carer was being given affection by an interloper. The most common reaction in these circumstances was for the dog to physically try to push in between the carer and the interloper,” the Daily Mail quoted him, as saying.
Boffins have traditionally believed that while most animals, including dogs, experience primary emotions such as anger, anxiety and surprise, they are incapable of experiencing second hand emotions such as jealousy, guilt and pride – something that this study questions.
“Many scientists believe that such secondary emotions are restricted to humans and their close relatives such as chimpanzees because they believe there is a need for the cognitive apparatus to understand the concept of self. But the data clearly suggest that complex emotions are present in a wider range of species than once thought and that animals do indeed have rich emotional lives,” he said.
Dr Morris said that the study provided ‘good empirical evidence’ that just like human beings, dogs too get jealous.
“The study systematically investigated evidence for a wide range of emotions including jealousy, pride and guilt in a wide range of domestic animals. Our study provided good empirical evidence that has convinced many scientists that dogs at least demonstrate behaviour that is very like human jealousy,” he concluded.
